Society For The Anthropology Of Lowland South America (SALSA): Call For Papers
2010 Conference
CALL FOR PAPERS
The Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America announces its sixth sesquiannual conference at the Hotel Contessa in San Antonio (TX), January 14–17, 2010.
SALSA’s conferences are the preeminent locus for the exchange of research, ideas, and information among scholars interested in lowland South America, its past and contemporary peoples, cultures, economies, and environments.
Presentation Formats Discussion forums. The bulk of presentation slots at SALSA 2010 are in discussion forums. This format emphasizes discussion and exchange of ideas over presentation. Presenters prepare a short paper (3-7 pages) in advance. The forum session is devoted entirely to discussion of presenters’ papers. Please note that this still counts as a formal paper presentation. Forum themes are:
- Body, soul, state, and world market: integrating levels of analysis in greater Amazonia;
- Redefining language group and culture area: understanding the past and present of lowland South America;
- From domestication and landscapes to perspectivism and consubstantiality: rethinking the relationships between the human and nonhuman in Amazonian studies;
- Disconnecting/Reconnecting the lowlands and the highlands: rethinking a geographic and analytical distinction.
To submit a paper to a forum, please provide a brief (100 word) description of the paper you would prepare for your first choice panel, and an equally brief description of the paper you would prepare for your second choice panel.
Individual presentations. There will be sixteen 40-minute slots for individual presentations. We encourage members to use these times to present recent research findings and discuss material that will benefit from receiving feedback from our members, with their diverse perspectives and experience. The purpose of these slots is not to accommodate 40-minute presentations, but to provide space for a shorter presentation and adequate discussion.
Poster session. We encourage attendees to consider creative ways to use multi-media displays to communicate to other scholars and to a wider audience.
Submit your paper titles, abstracts, or forum discussant preferences to Program Director Steven Rubenstein (steven.rubenstein@liv.ac.uk). Conference registration and hotel reservations are through Trinity University of San Antonio. For more information, please visit: http://www.salsa-tipiti.org/Conferences/conferences.html

The Battle of Four Lakes
On This Day: In 1858 over 500 Coeur d'Alene people fought Colonel George H. Wright and 600 soldiers at the Battle of Four Lakes near present-day Spokane, Washington. Wright attacked and drove off the Indians inflicting heavy losses while reportedly not losing a single soldier due to the long range (500+ yards) of the new Springfield Model 1855 Rifle-Musket vs. the short range (50-100 yards) of the Indian's smoothbores. Over 60 Coeur d'Alene warriors lost their life protecting their people and land.
